Urban Teen Magazine program serves youth 13 through 18 years of age and educates teens in the field of magazine publishing, journalism and reporting.  Urban Teen Magazine offers youth hands-on job job skills development within specific content areas which focus on real-world experiences that are relevant, challenging and meaningful to workforce environments. The Program empowers teens by improving and developing math, reading, writing, speech communication and research skills, as well as develops positive self esteem, character and relationship building and provides mentoring opportunities and teen leadership. Teens also develop skills in areas of leadership, decision-making, critical thinking, teamwork and organizational management.

Teens work together and individually towards their goal of creating from cover to cover magazine publication.  Daily involving themselves in staff meetings, ad creation, they learn to
coordinate their efforts to create a youth inspired teen magazine/publication while being guided through their creative writing and communication skills; drafting revisions, editing, proofreading, news reporting, photography, article developing and interviewing.

The Process

The Urban Teen Magazine Staff collaborates in a team setting, brainstorming ideas, researching data and developing content for article placement within the magazine.

In clearly defined roles as Reporters, Journalists, Photographers, Publishers and Editors each youth participant works to develop specific topics of interests. Their responsibility includes writing, drafting revisions, editing, proofreading, news reporting, photography and interviewing. Each task and effort moves them closer towards meeting a deadline for article placement.

Finally as the completion of a publication approaches, each youth along the way would have developed skills that prepare them for challenging workforce environments.
